The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。1931年“九·一八事变”爆发后,日本关东军金力推行“欲征服支那,必先征服满蒙”的罪恶计划,欲将满蒙从中国分裂出去,建立日本人操纵的傀儡政权。潜伏于内蒙古苏尼特右旗的日本特务,开始在该旗王爷德穆楚克栋鲁普身边煽风点火。 与此同时,中共西北特委书记王若飞来到内蒙古,与中共西蒙工委书记云泽见面,指示内蒙古共产党组织发动蒙汉群众,建立武装,粉碎日本帝国主义的阴谋。国民党军警得到情报,逮捕了王若飞。云泽等同志想方设法营救王若飞,云泽只身闯虎穴,面见绥远省长傅作义将军,晓以民族大义,终于说服傅作义,拒绝了何应钦将王若飞押送北平的电令,暗中保护了起来······。
