七十年代，城市知青马杰（文章 饰）来到西北某农村插队，被村里漂亮种驴——黑六的叫声吸引。马杰嫌黑六不让他骑，某次工伤在诊所缝针时偷了麻醉剂打给黑六，队长大莲（岳红 饰）以为黑六生病，心急如焚。马杰奇迹般地“治愈”了黑六，赢得大莲和队里的信任，成为牲口饲养员。马杰一边喂驴，一边偷偷与村里的女青年彩凤（白静 饰）相恋。与此同时，马杰对黑六只配种不干活的特殊待遇愈发不满，并对大莲“驴比人值钱”的论调暗自气愤，发泄中竟打坏了黑六的“命根子”。无法配种也不能干活的黑六被马杰宰杀，却没曾想黑六的弟弟，毛驴黑七，从此与马杰不共戴天。人与驴的斗争愈演愈烈。。Fred Schepisi's adaptation of Graham Swift's prize-winning novel is a quietly graceful portrait of four working-class Brits, bound by years of friendship, that unites some of England's finest actors in a powerful and deeply moving ensemble production. The film was closely based on the historical record, and all of the major incidents portrayed were drawn from contemporary accounts by those who took part. Filming took place on the Falkland Islands and at Ealing Studios. Urban is a fluent Spanish-speaker, and plays an uncredited role as the Argentine radio operator.。
