上世纪二十年代初，在靠近前苏联边界的三不管地区，有一个叫蒙塔的流浪枪手，来到了小镇乐土驿，发现有两伙匪徒在这里对峙，匪徒们赶走了乐土驿的百姓，似乎在这里是为了争夺什么。蒙塔周旋于两个匪帮之间，终于搞清了其中的秘密，最终消灭了匪帮，夺回了国宝。。Morse finds himself the subject of a murder investigation when his friend, Beryl Newsome, is murdered at a rehearsal of the Magic Flute and he foolishly touches the murder weapon. Morse is suspended and DCI Bottomley, with DS Lewis assisting him, is put in charge of the case.
